Handel’s Messiah is a great work for orchestra, chorus and soloists. The text is taken from the Bible and forms a dramatic commentary on the whole prophecy and fulfillment of the redemption of man.

As with all oratorios, Messiah, is divided into three parts. In Messiah, the three parts represent Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection; each part breaking down into a series of arias and choruses, with a Biblical passage as their basis.

Messiah is Handel’s (1685-1759) most famous work and remains immensely popular among concert-goers in the English-speaking world.

I have more than 35 complete Messiahs and listen to a composite "best of the best"performance I have put together. I have just begun to audition Rutter's recording, but already I know I will be incorporating it heavily into my master composite. Rutter avoids both the turgid.thick Boult-Sargent-Bernstein ponderous and the dry-as-dust reedy historical purism now trendy. He uses Handel's orchestration uncontaminated by Mozart, Prout, and the like.,He uses modern instruments, avoiding the need for excuses. This performance is in the tradition begun by Scherchen and developed by Shaw, Davis, Marriner, and Westenberg among others..

Two aspects of this recording leap out at me::the quality of the Cambridge Singers and the quality of the recorded sound. Together, they are awesome. We hear Handel's inspired harmony and counterpoint in breathtaking unprecedented crystal detail. How do the Cambridge Singers compare to the legendary Robert Shaw Chorale? We could debate that forever, with considerable merit in both camps. But Rutter has the advantage of a half-century better sonic fidelity, and it shows. It really shows -- on my electrostatic home system as well as my mid-fi car system..

The soloists are all capable. But in all cases somebody else does it a lot better. Think sopranos Heather Harper and Judith Blegen, altos Janet Baker and Yvonne Minton, tenors Philip Langridge and Jon Aler, basses Raimund Herincx and Bryn Terfel, trumpeter Mark Bennett.

But set all that aside. For the recorded choruses alone, Rutter's recording is a revelation.

Messiah The Complete Work John Rutter 9781598561494 Books Reviews

Part of my annual tradition, both Christmas and Easter, was to play numerous times the Toronto Symphony version (1985) of The Messiah to the point it was "skipping" from wear.
This past Christmas-2012,wanting to replace my worn-out cd with the John Rutter version, I was aghast to note the price for The Complete Work went up and up, then became unavailable.
However, as the Easter 2013 approached, I knew the musical experience could wait no longer.
On receipt, I set aside a special time to listen from start to finish. It left me weeping with its clarity- like holding a piece of fine crystal to the light or sipping a glass of excellent wine.
I am so blest at having the opportunity to buy this. It was and is worth every dollar spent.
What makes it even more precious is I've participated in choirs through the years singing this great Handel piece.
As a fan of Rutter and the Cambridge Singers, I knew their take on Handel's Messiah was a natural for me. Although the sound of the Cambridge Singers has changed over the years, it has never lost its distinctive hallmarks, as on this recording. Rutter has a first-class group of young soloists, and I especially like the soprano and bass soloists. I know that Melanie Marshall might not be able to touch Anne Sofie von Otter's renditions of the alto parts on Pinnock's DG recording, but she gives a truly heartbreaking account of He was despised. Throughout, the tempi is brisk and bright, but yet the performance bubbles with conviction and commitment. Rutter also shines as a choral conductor, eliciting a superb overall sound from his choir and crafting every nuance intricately in the manner of Robert Shaw. I think this would probably be one of my top dogs for Messiah, alongside Pinnock and the live Cleobury-King's College version.
This was a very good CD and masterfully done. There have been many interpretations and variations of Handel's Messiah. This was a very good one. I have listened to others where some of the selections were sung by males in bass or tenor and the same selection sung by females in soprano or alto. This of course creates a different sound and interpretation and sometimes leads to comparing the styles. That is why I gave it four instead of five stars. Some selections I prefer in an alto voice and others in bass or tenor. But overall, Messiah is a classic masterpiece. This CD comes with a companion booklet containing the history of the Messiah, recording session photos, and references to biblical texts for the various selections. I highly recommend it.
Upon a first listen to this recording of complete Messiah, I was hooked. I have heard many renditions of this work (and either sing it myself or listen to the complete Messiah every year live in concert for the past few years), and this has become the authoritative version, for me. The work is crisply and sensitively executed, with a lightness and freshness that are often lost when Messiah is performed. The diction of the chorus is excellent, but doesn't overshadow the musicality of the piece, instead allowing the lyric to shine through the texture. A beautiful performance and good recording combine to make this one a real keeper.
This is the BEST Messiah rendition available anywhere - and I have many.

WHAT I LIKE
1) The choir is a dream. You can't beat the Cambridge Singers.
2) The soprano us UNBELIEVABLE. Effortless, soaring, agile and truly spectacular. I've never heard a soprano this good.
3) Bass is excellent. Very deep, warm, and agile.
4) Reasonable Tenor. Has some nice areas in part 2.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE
1) The alto is awful. She has a strange technique of vocalization that almost staccatos most of her notes. Definitely not legato where legato is needed!! Fortunately, there aren't a lot of alto solos in this collection.

Overall, you must listen to this rendition of the Messiah. It's priceless.
