An heiress turns away every suitor until she meets a mysterious foreigner at a masque ball. His kiss ignites her in ways that nothing else has, but he refuses her pleas to elope. Has she lost her heart to a man who doesn't exist?

John Howards has finally accepted an invitation to one of his cousin's masque balls. Having always been shy he decides to attend in the guise of his friend from the Congress of Vienna. What he didn't expect was that playing a role would free him to flirt with a beautiful woman. Or that she would return his regard. After an illicit night in the garden that he regrets, can he convince her to marry as himself?

Elisa Jarvis has made it to the age of one and twenty without falling prey to a fortune hunter. Now her guardian is pressuring her to marry before her next birthday - in less than a fortnight! She needs to find the love of her life, not be distracted by the latest dull gentleman who has decided to court her.

Lord Lucifer Disciple Haberdashers Nights Book 1 edition by Sue London Romance eBooks

John Howard is a shy, stand in the background, sort of guy. He accepts an invitation to a masquerade ball given by his cousin. Most of the time he refuses these invitations, preferring to be alone. At the ball he meets Elisa Jarvis, heiress. Elisa , pressured by her guardian to marry, rejects all the dull men who try to woo her. John has recently returned from Vienna where he was friends with a flamboyant man named Casmir. Considering himself a person of no interest, John decides to take on Casmir's persona; so he becomes this glib, seductive man. Being able to hide behind a mask helps perpetuate his ruse. Unbeknownst to Elisa, she falls for John, a man who is presenting a totally opposite representation of himself behind his mask. The book moves at a good pace and has a different approach. It's interesting to see John evolve into the real man that he wants to become without using subterfuge.

Well written with relatable and likeable characters. It's a sweet addition to the Haberdashers series. It also has a few nice steamy scenes.
This is a short book so I wasn't expecting much depth in terms of character development or complex plot. Early in the story I do not like the heroine. She is spoiled, dismissive of others, judgmental and really shallow. She falls in love with a complete stranger because he is mysterious, and has a way with foreplay in dark gardens. That's it - she's just turned on. On that basis, she asks this complete stranger to marry her - at least twice. Once she discovers his deception she is understandably angry but she does pay attention to his better qualities and eventually really does fall in love. The hero on the other hand is rather completely drawn both in this novel and the previous "Fates for Apate" where he is introduced as Casimir's friend in Vienna. He is smart, witty and very shy, withdrawn and introverted. Once revealed he works to make himself acceptable to the heroine and her aunt and guardian and that was an interesting process to follow. He also apparently knows exactly how to turn a woman on because he has read all about it. Its not entirely clear to me that he has ever actually had sex before but he's really good at it. The opposite poles of his personality are a little too far apart for me. So he starts out well and loses ground as the book progresses while the heroine is the opposite. Its an okay story but I really can't recommend it.
I love Sue London's heroes! All of them! This was especially fun because John Howards had been such a minor character in another story, but I remembered him well & loved to see his transformation & then his friends come to his aid. It was just such an awesome sweet love story & had me smiling all the way! I hope we get to see him again later!
Sue! You have done it again! I loved the short story or John and Elisa - it was funny and heartwarming. I loved that Casimir was in the book as his 'mentor' and friend. The sense of humor both John and Elisa had along with his timidity in the beginning and her tenacity were perfection. Having all of the Haberdashers together at the ball was a nice touch as well! I can't wait to read more of the Haberdashers Nights series!! Soon i hope!
Normally I do not care for novellas but since I was out of new reading material I decided to give it a try and so glad I did. This was a fun quick read that had me laughing. Johns character was really well developed for the length of the book and I loved that he wasn't the traditional night and shining armor. cant wait to read the next in the series!
I love the Haberdashers and especially this book. It was fun watching Elsa & John's romance grow and culminate. I hope it won't be long Sue London releases .another one.
4.5 stars - It's not often you find a hero in a romance who is socially awkward and shy like this--it was a nice change, and seeing him change to be with the heroine was fantastic. It was also great to see the characters from the third book again. While I found it unlikely that Lord Lucifer would write a book, my favorite line actually came from it "If you listen quietly enough, you can hear her wanting you. And what a lovely sound it is."
